Sculpture First Piece

La Source

Première pièce is a founding work, a sculpture born before all the others – like a spring.
Its simple, primitive, almost archaic form carries the gentleness of an inaugural gesture: that of the very first contact between hand and material, between the desire to create and the line that takes shape.

Its compact silhouette, gentle curves and lack of figurative detail recall the obviousness of prehistoric forms, when the purity of volume said it all.
The warm, patinated surface evokes sculpted wood: the trace of the tool, the irregularities of life, the material that breathes under the hand.

In this work, nothing is overplayed: strength comes from simplicity.
It’s a sculpture that stands, calm and naked, like a beginning.
It tells the story of Catherine Chavigny’s first gesture – a gesture that is still intuitive, without conscious intention, but already inhabited by what will become her artistic language.

A primitive and essential figure

In Première pièce, we feel the naïve confidence of beginnings, the freedom we sometimes lose when experience and expectations set in.
The supple verticality, the almost human roundness, the breadth of the bottom of the form: everything seems to emerge from a natural equilibrium, guided by the sole quest for accuracy.

The sculpture represents nothing precisely, yet evokes much:
– a body,
– a sacred stone,
– a silent presence,
– a primordial feminine,
– an intimate totem.

Its apparent simplicity conceals a depth: the origin of all artistic work lies there, in that first fragment of earth that became form.

The gesture that opens a path

In this piece, we can see the hand hesitating, searching, letting itself be guided.
And yet, Première pièce already possesses the artist’s signature:
a search for purity, an attraction to organic forms,
a refusal of the superfluous,
a profound respect for matter and for the slowness of the process.

It is the seed of a journey, the first response to an inner call.
A simple presence, but one that already contains everything: the impulse, the intuition, the quest.
