Mother and child
Shaped over more than a year, Mère et son enfant (Mother and Child) was born over a long, intense period of time.
Nearly fifty centimetres of clay were worked, undone, reworked and polished, until the sculpture became imbued with the very special weeks following birth: the days after, the suspended space where everything is turned upside down, where we discover this new bond, so deep, so absolute.
It bears the memory of this encounter, of this tender upheaval, of the indestructible bond that unites a mother and her child from the very first moments.
In its silhouette, we sense an enveloping gesture: an inclined torso, a protective form, a movement that opens and closes at the same time, like a silent embrace.
The sculpture seems to breathe with a calm breath, as if lulled by the rhythm of an infant curled up against it.
Its full volume, its continuous line, its rising curve testify to the gentle strength of motherhood – a vertical, luminous love that stands upright.
An inhabited presence
Mère et son enfant (Mother and Child ) is created in a patinated clay with bronze highlights, whose smooth surface captures the light and reveals multiple nuances: matte gold, deep brown, almost coppery glints.
This warm, almost living material reinforces the sculpture’s sense of presence.
One has the impression that it is watching over, carrying, cradling.
The almost abstract form gives way to the essential: the momentum of the torso, the protective opening, the thickness of the belly, the softness of a gesture that doesn’t seek to represent, but to embody.
It’s this organic abstraction that allows everyone to see their own story: a mother, a child, a bond, an emotion.
The unbreakable link
This work bears witness to a fundamental, primitive love, the kind that arises in the post-birth period: that fragile, sacred space where the world expands, where one body adjusts to another, where a new identity is born as much as the child itself.
In this sculpture, the mother is not just a figure: she is a refuge, a breath, an anchor.
The child is not represented, but his presence is everywhere: in the hollow, in the inclination, in the gentle tension that rounds out the form.
Sculpture does not show: it suggests.
And it is in this suggestion that its strength lies.
Mother and Child honors the discreet power of those first weeks, when we learn to love, to listen, to become two.
